Tansy chamomile is similar to a lesser extent. Its main difference is the rich yellow color of flowering baskets. Although the rest of the similarities are present.

A perennial plant, with a horizontal strong root, which, as it develops, lumps. From the root there are multiple processes, with large roots literally entangling large areas of soil. In the first years of life, the plant gives one upright, rounded stem. As the growing season grows, the number of stems increases, which usually occurs in the fourth or fifth year of culture development. The height of the stems can reach one and a half meters, although they usually grow to fifty centimeters - one meter.

Stems of tansy branch along the entire height, small leaves are formed on the branches. They are elongated oval in shape, with edges notched, sharp blades. The surface of the sheets is dark green, the inner part is lighter, with streaks and dark patches.

During the flowering period, which comes at the end of June, numerous inflorescences appear in the upper part of the stem and on its “branches”. They are collected in baskets in the form of truncated balls. The inflorescences are located compactly, on each branch their number can reach five to twelve. Bright yellow shade makes the plant very attractive during flowering. At the same time, it particularly strongly exudes a specific "camphor" aroma.

In August and September, the plant bears fruit. In the flower baskets are formed small fruit-seeds of oblong shape, with short teeth on the surface. These teeth help tansy to actively spread over large areas.

Geography and distribution

Thanks to a developed root system, the culture can grow on the poorest soils. It quickly populates the areas cultivated by man, therefore, it is often found near garden cooperatives, grows under the fences of private houses and in the rows of agricultural fields.

Cultivated as an ornamental plant, the grass tansy can press the "neighbors" on the plot, often running wild, growing like a weed. In Russia, it is found everywhere, even in the Far East, where, according to the florist and the Soviet botanist Alexei Schroeter, multi-ton preparations of this plant material are possible. It grows in meadows, in ditches, in the undergrowth, but it rarely forms thickets, usually grows as single “bushes”. For the pharmacological industry is not cultivated.

On garden plots breeding tansy does not require special skills. It is possible to plant a plant in the fall, having scattered seeds in an open ground. In the spring you can take seedlings - a process from the root. Any sunny or shady area will be suitable for cultivation; the culture feels great even in the bush thickets. Having dropped it at a gazebo or garden bench, you not only decorate the garden, but also protect yourself from annoying insects that are intimidated by the smell of tansy.

Collecting and harvesting

Official medicine recognized the value of the flowers of the plant tansy. Grass is also used in folk. Preparation of them can be carried out simultaneously.

  • Flowers Gather at the very beginning of flowering. At this time, the baskets look concave, their middle is drawn inside. It is important to collect the raw materials until the middle area becomes convex and begins to unfold. If you miss the time, in the process of drying flowering will continue, after which the baskets will turn brown. Valuable substances in such raw materials are significantly less than those harvested on time. The flowers are torn off by hand or cut with a pruner, scissors. You can collect flaps with many inflorescences completely, but before drying the basket must be separated from the legs. The harvested raw material is laid out in a thin layer under a canopy and dried until the wrappers of the baskets become leathery. When using dryers set the temperature no higher than thirty degrees. It is extremely important not to overdry the flowers of tansy, otherwise they will crumble. The shelf life of properly harvested raw materials is two years.
  • Grass Cut off the stems with leaves after collecting flower baskets. Immediately after collection, they are dried in the sun for several hours and formed into tight bunches. They are tied with a rope and hung in a shady place, under a well-ventilated canopy. After drying, the grass retains its properties for four years.

Plant populations are restored freely after harvest, so there are no restrictions on harvesting.

Composition and properties

The use of tansy herb in medicine is based on its composition. The plant is included in the natural phytocomplexes recommended by therapists for a number of chronic and acute diseases. Medicinal qualities are provided by the content of essential oil, tannins, bitter substance tanetatin, a number of organic acids and volatile alkaloids.

The few studies of recent years have revealed a high content of steroid and flavanoid compounds in the plant. In the course of a study by specialists of the Yakutsk Scientific Center for Complex Medical Problems in 2015, the presence of steroid substances in raw materials was established that provide the known pharmacological effects of the plant: choleretic, spasmolytic and antiparasitic action.

Aqueous dosage forms of tansy are rich in flavanoids. These substances have a high antioxidant activity, when administered as a remedy for diseases of the stomach and intestines are able to inhibit the formation of free radicals. Possess anti-inflammatory activity, stimulate local immunity. In 2007, an international group of researchers consisting of Igor Shepetkin, Mark Quinn and Hans Syo presented evidence of the antitumor activity of a group of flavanoids found in tansy flowers.

The hypotensive effect of the complex of flavanoid tansy has been established, in particular, due to the presence of the acacetin substance in it. In terms of impact, it is not inferior to the popular papaverine medicine.

Currently, the plant is considered as a source of polysaccharides of the group of tanacetans. Studies have shown that in the composition of tansy their number exceeds the presence in other medicinal plants. Tanacetans belong to the class of pectins, have an astringent effect. They are able to bind in the serum low-density lipoproteins, forming sclerotic plaques as they accumulate in the vessels. In the future, there are opportunities to use tansy for the prevention and treatment of atherosclerosis, lowering cholesterol in the blood. But this action phytopreparation is not fully understood.

Application of tansy

In Belgium and Finland, the plant is included in the state pharmacopoeia, recommended by official medicine as an antipyretic, anti-inflammatory, anesthetic. Used with angina, headaches, worm infestations. Also in these countries, tansy is used during menstruation to reduce bleeding or completely stop menstruation.

In German and official Russian medicine, indications for receiving tansy are limited to diseases of the gastrointestinal tract and helminthic invasions.

Infusion of flowers in diseases of the digestive tract

The tanning agents in the composition of the medicinal plant have an astringent and anti-inflammatory effect in case of gastrointestinal disorders. The well-known Soviet therapist Mikhail Nosal recommended using dried flowers to make an infusion from indigestion, with diarrhea, including bloody and due to an infectious lesion.

The infusion is effective with low acidity of gastric juice, gastritis. It has a choleretic effect, therefore people are often recommended as a means of complex treatment of hepatitis, cholecystitis. In this capacity, tansy is included in the composition of herbal preparations “Tanacin”, “Tanatsehol”, produced by the pharmaceutical industry. In Germany, it is used for enterocolitis, constipation, flatulence.

Infusion for hair growth

In home cosmetology, the plant is used for hair as a means of stimulating their growth. The impact is due to the rich flavanoid composition of the raw material, which improves the blood supply to the hair follicles.

  1. Place two tablespoons of flowers in the jar.
  2. Fill with boiling water of two hundred and fifty milliliters.
  3. Leave the lid to infuse for four hours.
  4. Strain.

The resulting infusion rubbed into the scalp after each wash, rinse it is not necessary. Treatment should be a course within one month.

Unproven action

One of the unproven properties of the plant is to stimulate miscarriage. In the people the tansy for abortion is really used. Probably, its action in this case is provided by the ability to weaken smooth muscles, which reduces the severity of spasms, while at the same time relaxing the uterus. Therefore, for women expecting a child, the plant is contraindicated.

But using tansy for miscarriage is dangerous. Its use in small doses recommended for therapeutic purposes will not cause critical consequences. And exceeding the dosage can cause intoxication of the body with toxic substances that are part of, and bring significant harm to health. Features of the effects of plants on the body of a pregnant woman and the fetal development of the child have not been studied.

When using tansy, it is important to consider its contraindications. The plant is toxic, with restrictions on its use in official medicine. It rarely serves as the drug of choice in the treatment of diseases of the liver and gastrointestinal tract, for which non-toxic drug analogues, including those of plant origin, are used. If while taking the drug there are symptoms of poisoning in the form of nausea, vomiting, weakness, dizziness, you should immediately seek medical help.

Common tansy is a widespread, but little studied medicinal plant. Surveys are limited to the presence of organic toxins in its composition; therefore, official medicine uses it extremely rarely. In folk finds application in disorders of the digestive tract, liver disease. The main purpose of herbal remedies is the treatment of parasitic lesions of the body with worms of all kinds, Giardia, opistorhas.
